News: Lakesite looking into sewers

Sewers are on the minds of Lakesite commissioners, after looking into the pros and cons of setting up a sewer system for the city during their monthly meeting on Oct. 17.

"We authorized a contract for doing a technical and economic feasibility study for sewers in the city," Lakesite Mayor Bob Mullin said. "It will look at the feasibility of putting them in. We look at where the positive pressure flow is. They tie that all together such as capital costs, and continuing costs."

Commissioners are looking at the costs of sewers and the possibility of installing a system in stages.

"The city commission thought we should look at it," Mr. Mullin said. "It will probably be a $15,000 study. We worked before with CTI."

Commissioners are taking the first step to see what putting sewers into the city would involve.

"We will look at the topography of the land," he said. "If it affects citizens we will have public meetings for input. A lot of the communities around, it may bring up home values. The decisions will be split. A fairly small group needs sewers. We would eventually put sewers in the whole city, if we decide to, we would put them in in phases."

The feasibility study will determine cost effectiveness, and who would benefit best from sewers first, he said.

"There are not real serious sewer problems," he said. "We have gotten feedback from some areas that want sewers. We have had no health issues yet."

However, Port Serena in Hixson, which is close to Lakesite has had sewer issues in the past.

"It seems like a prudent thing to do, to look at it in the future," Mayor Mullin said. "We have garbage services, police, fire, roads, street lighting, codes enforcement, and building inspections."

The next Lakesite Commission meeting will be Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Lakesite City Hall.
